What Qatar National Day commemorates

On 18 December 1878, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani succeeded his father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani, as ruler. Sheikh Jassim is regarded as the founder of the modern Qatari state: he continued the work of bringing the tribes of the peninsula under a single authority and defended that authority for the rest of his life. The day is named for that founding, which is why it is also called Founder’s Day rather than an independence day.

That distinction is the reason the date is where it is. Qatar became fully independent on 3 September 1971, and for over three decades that September date was the national day.
